About this course

Think about a game of tennis. A rally only works when both players are involved. One person sends the ball, the other notices it, responds and sends it back. If one person keeps the ball or does not give the other person time to return it, the rally ends. Conversations and interactions with children work in the same way. Talking Tennis is about creating meaningful back-and-forth interactions with children. It reminds us that communication is not just about adults talking. It is about noticing, responding, waiting and giving children time to take their turn. The way we position ourselves matters. When we get down to a child’s level, make warm eye contact, use facial expressions, follow their interests and wait for their response, we create the conditions for communication, confidence and learning.
